What to Watch Before the Academy Awards
By Evin Santana, Staff Writer
With the Academy Awards approaching quickly on February 26, 2017, there are many different movies that should be watched before the big event.
The movie La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, directed by Damien Chazelle, has been nominated for over four different categories such as Best Original Song, Score and Screenplay.
La La Land is a movie about an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) who falls in love with a struggling jazz musician (Ryan Gosling). Both of them work to keep their relationship alive while simultaneously trying to accomplish their dreams. Ryan Gosling is nominated for Best Actor and Emma Stone is nominated for Best Actress.
La La Land was also nominated for Best Picture along with Arrival, Lion, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester by the Sea, and Fences.
If you’re not really a Ryan Gosling fan, there are plenty of other movies for everyone to find. If you’re a sci-fi fan, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been nominated for Best Visual Effects. Rogue One is about the Rebel Alliance and their plans to steal the Death Star plans.
My favorite, however, has to be Hidden Figures a movie about three female African-American mathematicians who played a vital role in helping launch into space John Glenn, the first American to orbit the planet. Hidden Figures’ Octavia Spencer is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Moana and Zootopia are both nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s song “How Far I’ll Go” is nominated for Best Original Song. “How Far I’ll Go” is competing against “City of Stars” from La La Land.
Whether they win or not, all of the nominees are worth checking out.
