Faith Ringgold is known largely for pioneering painted story quilts, which combine a written narrative with a painted image on a quilt. Ringgold’s art reflects her desire for racial and gender equality, both in the art world and in politics. In 1971, Ringgold formed the collective, Where We At, with two other Black female artists, Dindga McCannon and Kay Brown. The collective was a way for them to share their creativity and struggles with other Black women in art.
