Richmond Barthé was a sculptor, painter, and major contributor to the Harlem Renaissance. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago after being denied attendance at the New Orleans Art School due to his race. Barthé became famous for his religious subjects and for depicting the Black body and African culture. As he gained more recognition, the US government commissioned him to sculpt an American eagle for the Social Security building in D.C., as well as a bas-relief sculpture for the Harlem River Housing Project.
