Sofia Vergara stands as a beacon of success for the Hispanic community and is recognized as one of the most accomplished Colombian actresses of all time. From starring in a Pepsi-Cola commercial to being a judge on America’s Got Talent, she has opened doors for other aspiring Hispanic entertainers.
You probably know her as “Gloria” in the hit sitcom Modern Family, where she plays a feisty and confident Columbian woman who takes on countless jobs while also caring for her family. This role not only earned her four Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, but reminded the audience that it’s okay to be loud and different, and to always unapologetically be yourself. Many women feel it’s not attractive or proper to be loud or expressive. We tend to limit ourselves from voicing out, but Sofia Vergara has broken that boundary.
Current fan of Modern Family, Kylie Greenfield ‘28, said, “Just seeing someone be so comfortable and confident standing out makes me feel like being loud isn’t a bad thing. It makes me feel proud to be such an expressive girl.”
She was also the first person of Latin heritage to be a judge on the panel of America’s Got Talent. She worked extremely hard in order to become an entertainer, and now she has the ability to help people form a successful career like hers.
Aside from helping others make it into the entertainment industry, she gives support to people in need as well. She has worked closely with St. Jude’s Research Hospital since 2012 and has created “Peace and Hope for the Children of Columbia,” a non-profit foundation that has helped thousands of children.
This organization focuses on providing health and academic aid to the youth of Colombia, investing in the development of parks, and providing medical treatments, school supplies, and recreational trips. Peace and Hope has also created scholarship programs to benefit academically outstanding students who are unable to afford university studies.
Sofia Vergara has broken cultural barriers and stereotypes for the Hispanic Community. She has used her success and position to help others with their struggles and to pursue their dreams just as she did.
