Christmas movies have become a staple in most families’ holidays. They invoke a nostalgic feeling that brings back old and sentimental memories. But what are the new holiday movies you can watch this year?
The first movie you should be watching over your holiday break is Our Little Secret, which came out on Netflix on November 27th. This Stephen Herek directed film starring actors Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding seems to be a promising movie. The premise of the story is based on 2 resentful exes with lots of history. They must spend Christmas together after finding out that their current partners are siblings, all while keeping it a secret.
Eva Upton ‘28 is most looking forward to watching this movie, “I think it’ll be a perfect way to transition into the holiday season and I also love Lindsay Lohan and think she portrays all of her characters really well.”
The second movie that should be on everyone’s list is Nutcrackers, which came to Hulu on November 29th. Featuring Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini, this endearing drama-comedy is based on true events. A workaholic, Mike (Stiller) has to travel to rural Ohio to look after his recently orphaned nephews. His life turns upside down and he finds himself becoming the caregiver for his ambiguous nephews.
The third movie that came out is the new Hallmark movie Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story. It is a story featuring Alana Higman, a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan. Her family is competing to win the team’s Fan of the Year contest. In the process, she falls for the director of fan engagement Derrick.
Olive Cohen ‘28 is excited to watch this movie, “I’m looking forward to watching this because I like Hallmark movies and how predictable they are, but hopefully they change something this year because once you watch one it feels like you watched them all since they’re so repetitive.”
The fourth new holiday movie is Hot Frosty. It was ranked #1 on Netflix after its first week of being released and has gone viral on the internet. The premise of the story is a lonely widow Kathy, (AKA Gretchen from Mean Girls) grieves the loss of her husband. She is gifted a magical scarf, which she places on a manly, chiseled snowman, who comes to life as “Jack.” After being brought to life, Jack sparks a romance with Kathy.
Everyone can all agree that Christmas movies are a huge staple in everyone’s holiday. But will the ones that come out this year live up to the classics? I guess we’ll find out.
