Professional sports, specifically the NBA, are built on a foundation of trust, fair competition, and loyal fans. This web of integrity keeps the NBA interesting, but when insiders exploit confidential information, the foundation crumbles.
On October 23, 2025 Terry Roizer, a current NBA player for the Miami Heat, Chauncey Billups, the coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Damon Jones, a former player, were all arrested for their relation to illegal gambling on NBA games and rigged poker games with mafia ties. These schemes are said to have spanned many years and resulted in the arrests of 34 individuals across 11 states.
The alleged actions of the three men exemplified a profound ethical breach that jeopardized the reputation of the league and eroded fans’ trust. Federal authorities released statements regarding a scheme dating back to at least 2019, when Billups reportedly used a rigged shuffling machine in mafia-tied poker games to win thousands.
It is speculated that in December 2022 the sports gambling scheme emerged. The core to this whole scheme was private game status information that would give bettors the upper hand. This information was things like playing time and injuries that would enable those with such insight to win thousands.
In a specific instance, Rozier allegedly tipped co-conspirators about leaving a game in
2023 early. This enabled over $260,000 in bets on his “under” performance.
Similar incidents followed, causing Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter to be banned by the NBA in 2024 and pleading guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in January 2025. Porter is now facing up to 20 years in prison.
Though the NBA’s code of conduct strictly prohibits sharing insider information and betting on games, the “insiders” still participated. This breach highlights the weaknesses of legalized sports betting. Fans begin to grow suspicious, now asking, “is my favorite player genuinely hurt or are they just trying to facilitate money?”
Adam Silver, the commissioner of the league, has put out a statement asking sports betting platforms to hold back on certain bet proposals as they are easy to manipulate.
But if the risks are so high, why do the “insiders” participate? To this question there is one answer: they seek the thrill. Gambling is easier than ever to access, and with power often comes greed. Professional athletes are simply eager to feel the adrenaline rush obtained through gambling.
Is the rush of a parlay worth jeopardizing the career and life you’ve worked your whole life to build? This scandal threatens the integrity of the NBA through eroded trust. To prevent situations like these from occurring again the league must emphasize the consequences of such actions and prioritize ethics.
